Fukaumi Shoten's Commitment
The gosu, blue underglaze is made using a stone mill. Unlike mass-produced products, this method is best suited for hand-drawn painting, making it easy to draw delicate lines and less likely to burn, which has earned it a positive reputation.
Fukaumi Shoten's ceramic works made using gosu maintain their high quality, and are stored in museums and used to entertain foreign dignitaries at the Imperial Court.
I hope I can support you in realizing the work you dream of creating.

5 reasons to choose us
Fukaumi Shoten is a family-run business run by the Fukaumi family for generations.
The Fukaumi family is the descendant of Korean potters brought back by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and the first generation was the founder of Arita ware, Fukaumi Soden and Hyakke Basen. The family has a history of over 420 years in the manufacture of porcelain and pottery in Saga Prefecture.
In addition, Fukaumi family has a history of more than 60 years since it began specializing in the manufacture of gosu, colored paints, and glazes. We believe that the biggest reason we have been able to progress alongside the development of Arita ware, porcelain, and ceramics up to now is because our customers have recognized the trust and track record we have built up over the years.
This is an irreplaceable and greatest asset for us who have been involved in the ceramics industry since the Azuchi-Momoyama era.
Fukaumi Shoten develops gosu and glazes in collaboration with public research institutes specializing in ceramics.
This is to meet the various requests from our customers regarding gosu and glazes. Therefore, we are also able to handle subtle differences in color and texture of gosu and glazes.
In addition, while reduction firing of porcelain is common for Arita ware, we have developed glazes that are suitable not only for reduction firing of porcelain, but also for oxidation firing of porcelain, reduction firing of pottery, and oxidation firing of pottery.
Furthermore, Fukaumi Shoten has many employees who have been with the company for over 30 years, and they can use their wealth of experience to suggest the best gosu and glazes.
Fukaumi Shoten offers over 4,500 types of glazes. (Porcelain glazes: 4,100 pieces, Pottery glazes: 400 pieces) (As of January 12, 2022)

More than 250 examples of glaze mixtures combining 10 basic glazes and 6 colorants are introduced in easy-to-understand pieces!
The same glaze mixture is used in three types of clay, white clay, and red clay, and is fired in both oxidation and reduction firing, resulting in approximately 1,600 test pieces. With a wide range of examples of mixtures and easy-to-read pieces, the book meets the needs of a wide range of potters.
If you are trying to mix glazes for the first time, first find a test piece of the glaze you want to make in the book. Then try making the glaze according to the recipe in the book.
If you want to make your own original glaze, you will need to have enough knowledge to be able to combine the ingredients yourself, so first read through the book, including columns, until you understand it, then try to mix your own original glaze based on the recipe given. By doing this, you will gain a deeper understanding of glazes.
