The History of Gosu
The chemical gosu currently used in Japan was developed by the Fukaumi family during the Meiji period.
In 1870, the German chemist Wagner came to Arita because he was knowledgeable about science.
Mr. Wagner tells Fukaumi Heizaemon, Suminosuke, and Takeji (father and son) that in Germany, cobalt is used to produce the color blue.
After hearing this story, the Fukaumi family conducted extensive research and developed a scientific method for producing gosu using cobalt as the main ingredient.
As a result, synthetic gosu, which was inexpensive and had good color development, began to be used in Arita and other parts of Japan.

Fukaumi Shouten's Gosu is extremely concentrated. Please adjust with water (or your preferred binding agent) according to the shading you want to express.
- Line drawing (Outlining): Gosu 1 to Water 3 (approx.)
- Thick Dami (Washes): 1 teaspoon of Gosu to 80ml of Water (approx.)
- Thin Dami (Washes): 1 teaspoon of Gosu to 250ml of Water (approx.)
- *For Sabi-gosu (high iron content) washes, please use "half" the amount of water mentioned above as a guide.

Q: How do I use the paint?
A: It is in a paste form, so please dilute it with water according to the purpose. For line drawing, use about twice the amount of water as the paint (dark, medium, light). Since there are individual differences in the color of the paint and brush strokes, please use this as a guide only.

A: If the paint is not compatible with the fabric or if there is a process that requires the painted surface to be touched by hands repeatedly, it may be better to add a small amount.
